Realistic Drop Shadows

Fun with Photoshop!

I was inspired to play around with drop shadows in Photoshop today after listening to The Digi Show yesterday (episode 82) where they talked about making digital layouts look like paper, and then reading Heddy's Bits and Bytes post on The Daily Digi today where she linked to an "Advanced Drop Shadowing" tutorial.

So, I grabbed a few elements from a kit I like (Old School by Digital Design Essentials), and started playing around. Move your mouse over the image to see it with and without shadows (or scroll down to see the before and after separately).

Shadows make a big difference, huh? :) I also used a couple of techniques that don't involve drop shadows. I followed One Little Bird's Washi Tape Tutorial, and I also used the the tips in The Daily Digi's Fonts Don't Float post.

Fun, right? I learn something new every day! :) Photoshop Elements is a GREAT program, and it served me well for a long time, but I'm excited to dig into full Photoshop (CS6) more and try new techniques (well, today anyway!). I'm not 100% sold on the look of the protractor, so I think I need to learn a bit more about shadowing acrylic elements.

Hope you're having a good week! What new things are you trying or learning?
