Step back in time almost 16 years, to the Fall semester of 1997. David and I were Juniors in college and were in marching band together. We had known each other since Freshman year, but weren't close friends until we started hanging out with the same group of people at the end of the summer in '97. We were just friends -- we hadn't started dating... yet.
Here we are with our friends at the Early Week dance (Early Week is right before school starts when we had a week of intense rehearsals and marching practice). L-R: Me, David, Stefanie, Pete, and Sarah in front. This was our core group of friends, plus David's roommate, Ryan.
OK, back to the story of our first kiss.
It was a warm day right after a band rehearsal. I was driving out of the parking lot with our friend, Stefanie, and David was walking to his truck carrying his trombone. When he saw us pulling out of the parking lot, he ran over to the car to give me a kiss on the cheek (he was a big flirt, so this was typical behavior). At the last second as he was approaching the car, I thought he was turning his cheek to the side for me to kiss it, so I turned my face toward him. Well... he wasn't turning his cheek after all, and we ended up kissing on the lips! It took us both by surprise. He jumped back and started running down the middle of the street, kicking up his heels (with his trombone in the air), yelling, "I kissed Jenny ____!" At the same time, I turned to Stefanie, with a little bit of bewilderment, and said, "I just kissed David ____!" She was smiling and laughing.
Note: He called me by my first and last name (almost everyone did back then), but I don't use our last name(s) on the blog -- hence the blanks.
