I brought it home for 97 cents, fully intending to turn it into a lovely chalkboard.
Well... even though the chalkboard spray paint can (Krylon) SAYS it will bond to plastic, apparently, it's not so great at bonding with printed uglified Christmas plastic. Parts of it are great, but parts of it started peeling off before I was even finished painting. I did several thin coats, allowing it to dry between coats, but then when I took the chalk to it (after waiting the recommended 24 hours), the chalkboard surface scratched right off. Bummer.
I managed to get the word EAT written on it. I thought about popping it up on the top of the kitchen cabinets as-is, but everywhere I put it, the lower part of the E got hidden behind the lip at the top of the cabinets. Cover up the lower part of the E with your finger. Go ahead, just do it... and see what that spells. Yeah... FAT. Not exactly what I was going for. HA.
So... I picked up the cheapest cookie sheets at Walmart today (around $5 for a set of three), and decided to give it another go. We'll see if the paint bonds any better to metal.
P.S. When I was thinking of the title for this post, "Tray Fail," the word "trefoil" kept coming to mind. I couldn't remember what trefoil meant, so, of course, I googled it. It's a shape, and when I saw it, I immediately thought of Girl Scouts. I was a Girl Scout from Brownies through my senior year in high school. So was my mom. Just thought I'd share that little tidbit. :)
Oh girl...that made me laugh!! I would definitely not want a FAT tray in my kitchen. ha! I love your projects! I can't wait to see what you do with your chalk paint after your chalkboard paint fun!
