Week 10 Right Side

Now, I'll zoom in on the different sections.

This card was a little complicated. The journal card set I used only came with 4x6's and bi-fold cards (which are basically 4x6's sized down to fit in the 3x4 pockets when folded in half -- at least I think that's what they are!). So.. to get a 3x4 digital card, I opened the 4x6 card in Photoshop, and selected and deleted the middle three inches. Then I took the two sides I had left and moved them together to create the new card, which was 3" wide x 4" tall.
The heart flag was part of a different journal card. Using the magic wand tool, I clicked once on the orange area to select it, and then held down shift while I clicked on the heart to add it to the selection. Then I right clicked on the selection and chose "layer via copy." Then I dragged the new layer (with only the flag in it) to my 3x4 journal card document. I added a shadow and that was that.
The font for SAT, SUN is Bebas Neue. The ampersand font is Segoe Script.
I sampled the navy blue and teal colors from papers used on the opposite page.
The journaling font is F25 Executive (I use this font on all my pages). I love justifying the text block to make it nice and straight on both sides. The shortcut for this is ctrl+shift+J, and it works in Photoshop Elements too.

I used one of the 4x6 collages by Designs by Lili. The blue and white flag is actually a hexagon (you can only see half of it). Hexagons are so popular right now, and come in a lot of kits, but I never realized their versatility until I did this layout! :)

Here's another 4x6 collage. This one actually uses the same template as the one above. The collage set comes with a couple that have six photo spots, but none of them were quite the right size, so I modified it. I selected the white dividers one at a time using the rectangle selection tool, and used "layer via copy" to put them on their own layers. Then, I duplicated them and moved the copies across the template to where I wanted them to be (using the arrow keys). I also duplicated two of the photo mask layers so I had six photo layers.

The calendar card is one of my new favorite things for 2013.
Calendar: 3x4 calendar cards 2013 (Monday Start) by Splendid Fiins
I always put it on the right side of the two-page spread so the date is reflected on both pages. I need to create a mini template for myself because I seem to forget what to do every week to make the calendar card look like this. :)
The bottom half of the calendar is transparent behind the numbers, but the letters are transparent on the top. So, when I clip the patterned paper to the calendar graphic, the background at the top and the numbers at the bottom show the paper. The pattern doesn't usually look very good on the numbers, so I draw a rectangle on top of the number section, and make it the same color as one of the darker colors in the patterned paper. Here's where I usually forget and have to play around to make it work right.
I line up the pattern paper with the calendar card, then line up the rectangle over the number area, with the rectangle in the layer above the pattern paper. I merge the paper layer and the rectangle layer, and then clip that to the calendar graphic. Then, I merge the paper/rectangle layer and the calendar layer. Then I clip that to the rounded corner template spot below. The rounded corner template spots on my template are all different colors, so I recolor that one to white before clipping the calendar to it. Whew!
The pink oval is one of the highlighter graphics that comes with the calendar set. It's a brush, so it can be any color. I chose the pink from the opposite page, and then added an orange stroke. I usually change the blending mode of the highlighter layer to linear burn to make the numbers show.
............
Well, there you go! It sounds like a lot of work when I type it all out like that, but it actually came together fairly quickly and easily.
If you want to learn how to use Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, I recommend taking an online class. I've taken classes by Tiffany Tillman at ReneePearson.com, and I also took this free one when I upgraded to Photoshop CS6 at JessicaSprague.com (there's a PSE version too):
