New knobs for the new year!

I completed a little project today, and I'm quite pleased with it, if I do say so myself! :) I went to Hobby Lobby yesterday and picked up an assortment of decorative knobs. They have a great selection, and (at my Hobby Lobby, at least) they are always 1/2 off. Mine were $2.99-$4.99 regular price, so I only spent $1.50-$2.50 each. My plan was to replace the oak/brass knobs on our pub mirror (which my very skilled uncle made for me a few years ago).

I wanted the knobs to be all different and have a fun look - slightly whimsical, but not too Mad Hatter-ish. I found some inspiration on Pinterest, of course.

I decided to try out the knobs on our little white dresser first just to see how they all worked (some have a bolt attached to the knob and a nut to secure it, and others have a separate bolt that screws into the knob). I put them all on the dresser and liked it so much I decided to leave them there! I think they give the dresser a little character and make it look slightly less like we just moved it out of the nursery (which we did).

That print in the wood frame is from here. And I totally copied was inspired by Meg's Christmas chalkboard message here.

I am still pondering what to do with the knobs on the pub mirror. I'm thinking about painting the little wooden circles in the center of each knob rather than replacing them. Something like this maybe...

After screwing the new knobs into the dresser, I realized that some of them just wouldn't work on the mirror because of they way they attach. I'd have to hack off the bolts that were too long, and I'm not sure if the nuts would be flush enough on the back of the mirror. Anyway... we'll see how that turns out later. I'm sure I'll come up with another plan, and then change it completely!

I discovered a tool today that can help if you're thinking about doing a mismatched knob project (or a matched knob project, for that matter). It's Anthropologie's DIY Hardware Tool. Very Fun. You can use any of their knobs and pulls on a variety of furniture. Here's the one I did just for fun:

So, what do you think? Would you ever use a bunch of mismatched knobs, or would that just be too CRAZY? :)

  1. I think painting the wooden center on the pub mirror knobs would look good. Like you, I don't think replacing them with a variety of different knobs will work very well -- you named all the troubles. The little dresser looks nice with "a bunch of mismatched knobs." :-) Love you!
